Project Summary:

The Climate Change Adaptation Evidence Hub undertook a major research initiative titled Leapfrogging Africa’s Energy Transition: Lessons from Kenya’s Energy Transition Process to explore how African countries can transition directly toward renewable energy systems without passing through carbon-intensive development pathways. The project used Kenya as a case study to generate evidence and policy recommendations for accelerating renewable energy adoption across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The project aimed to investigate the enabling factors behind Kenya’s success in renewable energy transition, including policy frameworks, decentralized energy systems, innovative financing models, digitization, and distributed energy generation. The study also sought to understand the barriers limiting renewable energy investments across Africa and identify scalable solutions for achieving universal energy access through clean energy technologies.

The research found that Kenya had successfully increased renewable energy penetration to nearly 90 percent of its electricity mix through investments in geothermal, solar, wind, and decentralized energy systems. Innovative market models such as pay-as-you-go solar technologies and mobile-enabled energy financing significantly expanded energy access among low-income households.

The project recommended increased investment in renewable energy infrastructure, regional policy harmonization, financing for decentralized energy systems, research and innovation, and stronger partnerships between governments, development agencies, and local communities. It further emphasized that Africa possesses abundant renewable energy resources capable of supporting universal energy access while simultaneously addressing climate change and sustainable development goals.

The findings continue to contribute to policy dialogue on Africa’s energy future and support evidence-based advocacy for a just and inclusive clean energy transition across the continent.
