Project Summary:
In 2021, the Climate Change Adaptation Evidence Hub conducted a continental scoping study on climate diplomacy, climate communication, and climate action opportunities across Africa. The project aimed to support the Global Strategic Communications Council (GSCC) in understanding the climate policy landscape, climate actors, and opportunities for strengthening African climate engagement and advocacy.
The project objectives included assessing climate governance systems, mapping climate actors and networks, analyzing energy transition debates, and identifying opportunities for strengthening African voices in global climate diplomacy. The initiative also focused on examining the risks associated with fossil fuel expansion and the opportunities for Africa to leapfrog toward renewable energy-based development pathways.
The study highlighted Africa’s unique geopolitical position and the urgent need for stronger local climate communication systems, media engagement, research networks, and grassroots mobilization. It also emphasized the importance of supporting locally-based climate experts, strengthening regional climate desks, and enhancing coordination among African climate justice actors.
The project generated strategic insights into climate narratives, policy opportunities, stakeholder engagement, and communication approaches necessary for strengthening Africa’s influence in global climate negotiations and climate governance processes.
